Paul has developed and introduced over 50 Bills and Motions in Parliament. These include:
• Amended the Employment
Insurance Act to extend maternity and parental leave benefit to a full year.
• Introduced a strategy to address the underground economy which has saved over $1 billion.
• Introduced a Caregiver Tax Credit for those who provide care to an aged, chronically ill or disabled family member.
• Amended the Canada Pension Plan Act to increase the accrual rate for firefighters due to their lower life expectancy.
• Amended the Criminal Code to provide increased sentences for those convicted of spousal or child abuse.
• Developed a national education and awareness campaign called “Drink Smart Canada” to caution expectant mothers and others about the risks associated with alcohol misuse
• Paul’s proposal for the creation of a senior medical officer for Canada was fulfilled by the appointment of Canada’s first Chief Public Health Officer who co-ordinates our response to national health emergencies such as SARS or pandemics.
• Due to his work, the Government has developed and tabled a comprehensive strategy to address Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
• Developed and introduced a policy strategy to assist seniors including a guaranteed annual income, elimination of mandatory retirement, enhanced pension supplements, stiffer sentences for those who abuse or defraud seniors, enhanced caregiver tax credits, homecare, housing and pharmacare assistance and the adoption of a Seniors’ Bill of Rights.
